David Hollier at
CONTEXT Art Miami

We are excited to announce New Apostle Gallery's participation in the Context Art Fair during Miami Art Week. Hollier's collection of brand new paintings features various recognizable faces of moviestars and musicians, including Jerry Garcia, Rihanna, and Carrie Fisher. Hollier’s acrylic works are accompanied by his unique typewriter pieces that include the Chanel No. 5 bottle and The Grateful Dead’s Dancing Bear. Along with his word pieces, Hollier has teamed with computer science and mechanical engineering students to create an innovative golden clock that displays the time on Mars.

INTERSTELLAR TIME PIECE: MIAMI AND MARS

We are very pleased to announce the worlds premier of the ‘Hollier-DG1’, interstellar timepiece, a clock that tells solar Martian time. It is paired with an Earth clock, the Hollier-DG-Bob, which in this case tells Eastern Standard Time. You may notice that Martian time moves slightly slower than Earth’s; this is the result of Mars’ planetary rotation taking longer. A single day on Mars, dubbed a “sol” by astronomers, lasts 24 hours, 39 minutes, and 35.244 seconds. Scaled to a 24-hour time scheme, each second, minute, and hour on Mars is about 2.75 percent longer than that of Earth.

To represent Martian time accurately, artist David Hollier has collaborated with two Oregon State University students, computer science major Matthew Dowling and mechanical engineering major Sebastian Gaddis, to create a clock whose hands move at the speed of Martian seconds. The Hollier-DG-1 tells the time on Mars from the point at which the Mars Curiosity Rover landed, at a longitude of 137.4 Eo. This pair of clocks is the first in a limited edition of six interstellar timepiece displays.
